Dear John,
Although I am well concerned about who you are and what it is that you do, you don’t know a single thing about me or where I come from. Rumors say my hometown is hell on Earth, but I like to call it the Life Challenge. You see, once the day begins in Juticalpa with a flaring sunshine, people wake up with a feeling of hope that someday their lives will be better, at least just a little different. Just as they are imagining a whole new life, a gang member breaks into their house and steals the last tortillas and beans they have left, threatening to kill them if they say anything to the police. As they live in despair and evil, each family sets off to work, where they only receive a few pennies worth of a day’s work. Around town people often hear that men disappear behind their factory jobs, and then someone sees the news and finds out that a murder occurred inside those doors, and that’s the end of a relative’s life. No word ever said to justify their death, not even an explanation. My dad was one of them, and I pray every day that he comes back to us, and I know that will never happen. It’s just a daily reminder of the misery I’m living in. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful that I am alive, and that my mom is always by my side, giving me strength and peace as each day passes by. We work as a team; she pats some tortillas while I call out on the streets the new deals we have. At the end of the day we have enough for our little family to have a roll of bread and some soup. That moment, when you know you’ve worked hard for your food, and you’re sharing it with your loved ones, is worth it all. Even though I’d do anything for my mom and my little brother to stay by my side forever more, it is to you that I beg for a chance in a lifetime. I know you work as a lawyer inside a branch of the government. That you provide people like me with miracles. So I pray to God that you give me one. Please help me get into the United States. I need a job and the money to take care of my family. My mom is dying and even though she tries to hide it, it is crystal clear to my eyes. My little brother, Carlos, he’s just starting elementary school, but with the influence that he sees around it won’t be long till he drops out of it. I need to show them that there is a way out of our problems, and in the States I will accept any job that you can get me. I don’t believe anything can be worse than where I come from. I plan to take a train all the way through Mexico, risking my life to save two others. Once I get into the United States, I will look for you in your LA office hoping that you'll have pity of me. I write to you in advance because I am aware that getting a job or a residency can take a full year. But I thought maybe it doesn’t have to be that way. A job is my priority John, the thing I’m mostly asking for, and I sincerely hope you understand what it feels like to be hopeless.
Thank you a thousand times in advance,
Karina.
